The following example gives you the start to a dimensional analysis problem. The goal is to turn yards into feet. Where will the yards go in the next ratio to make sure we correctly set up our problem?

35 yd                                         ft

Next ratio: 1 yd/3ft

What's the purpose of using scientific notation?

To condense really long numbers into a more readable format. This practice saves space on papers and time when relaying results from a study.

A botanist (someone who studies plants) wants to study the effects of different liquids on plant growth.

For the experiment, the botanist decides to feed the plants water, pineapple juice, and Dr. Pepper. The botanist gives the same amount of each liquid to 3 different plants and measures their height after 2 weeks.

Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and controlled variable in this experiment.

Independent= Type of Liquid

Dependent= Height of Plant

Control= Amount of Liquid

Why can the scientific method be considered fluid?

The process can flow from one experiment to the next, depending on the questions and curiosities arising from the original experiment

The steps can be revisited if errors are noted.

A wildlife biologist is studying grizzly bears and notices the bears floofing up their dens in November to prepare for hibernation. The wildlife biologist wishes to conduct an experiment on hibernation.

 To prepare for this experiment, the wildlife biologist must plan for an entire year. The wildlife biologist chooses to investigate three different variables he believes affect hibernation: temperature, availability of food, and concentration of a chemical in the body that causes sleepiness. The wildlife biologist chooses three different bears of the same species in separate environments. Grizzly Bear #1 is in an ecosystem where deer are very scarce. Grizzly Bear #2 is in a colder climate, and Grizzly Bear #3 shot with a hormone dart every night around 11:30 p.m. to increase the hormone in question.

  After 2 months of studying each Grizzly Bear, the wildlife biologist records that all three Grizzly Bear enter their caves to hibernate at the same time. Thus, the wildlife biologist declares that all three factors affect a bear’s ability to sense hibernation.

What is the independent, dependent, and a control?

Independent= Conditions

Dependent= Day/time of cave entering

Control= Type of bear

You are a palentologist digging up a fossil of a new dinosaur species discovered in Chile. Write a procedure for extracting this fossil with the following information in mind:

            - You are writing the procedure from the moment you leave the station ALONE looking for a good site to look for dino bones

             - Tool 1 is a chisel; Tool 2 is a walkie talkie; Tool 3 is a GPS which can be used to mark your location; Tool 4 is a rock hammer; Tool 6 is a brush; Tool 8 is called Vinac and is used if a fossil cracks while extracting; and Tool 9 are place markers

Explain why it is important for scientists to have controlled variables AND provide an example of an experiment where not having a controlled variable would affect the experiment.

Controlled variables are necessary because changing more than one variable at a time makes it difficult to figure out which variable affected the results.

Example experiments will vary.

You think that increasing the amount of salt in water will make it boil faster. Write out the steps you would follow in the scientific method to test this idea.

EACH STEP MUST BE INCLUDED AND SPECIFIC

Observation- We noted a difference in the amount of time needed to boil water when salt was or was not added to the water

Hypothesis- If salt is added to water, then the water will boil more quickly

Experiment- 10g of salt will be added to a pot containing 3 cups of water. The water will then be placed on the 7 setting, and the amount of time needed for steam to be produced will be tracked. The procedure will then be repeated with 5g of salt and 0g of salt. Each amount of salt will require 3 trials

Data- The amount of time will be tracked in a table.

Conclusion- From the results, the hypothesis will be accepted or refuted
