What is acculturation?
process of learning the beliefs and behaviors of a dominant culture and assuming some of the characteristics
What is cultural diversity?
differences based on cultural and ethnic factors
What is holistic care?
care that provides for the well-being of the whole person and meets not only physical needs, but also social, emotional, and mental needs
What is personal space?
distance people require to feel comfortable while interacting with others
What is sensitivity?
ability to recognize and appreciate the personal characteristics of others
What is agnostic?
individual who believes that the existence of God cannot be proved or disproved
What is culture?
values, beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behaviors, and customs unique to a particular group of people and passed from one generation to the next
What is matriarchal?
mother or oldest female is the authoritative figure
What is a polytheist?
worship and believe in many gods
What is spirituality?
beliefs individuals have about themselves, their connections with others, and their relationship with a higher power
What is an atheist?
person who does not believe in any deity
What is ethnicity?
classification of people based on national origin and/or culture
What is a monotheist?
believe in the existence of one God
What is prejudice?
To prejudge; a strong feeling or belief about a person or subject that is formed without reviewing facts or information
What is stereotyping?
assumption is made that everyone in a particular group is the same
What is bias?
preference that inhibits impartial judgement
What is ethnocentric?
individuals who believe that their cultural values are better than the cultural values of others
What is a nuclear family?
one or two aprents and a child or children
What is race?
classification of people based on physical or biological characteristics such as the color of skin, hair, and eyes; facial features, blood type, and bone structure
What is transcultural health care?
care based on the cultural beliefs, emotional needs, spiritual feelings, and physical needs of a person
What is cultural assimilation?
newly arrived cultural group alter unique beliefs and behaviors and adopt the way of the dominant culture
What is extended family?
includes nuclear family plus grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins
What is a patirarchal?
father or oldest male is the authoritative figure
What is religion?
organized system of belief in a higher power
