The Allies used island hopping in the Pacific to get closer and closer to Japan.  Japan refused to surrender and the loss of Allied lives was high.  To end the war the U.S. decided to use atomic bombs against Japan.  After the second atomic bomb Japan surrendered.  This ended World War II.
