What is the difference between a food web and food chain?
Food chains make up food webs
What is a consumer? Give an example.
cow
How do organisms get energy if they are nowhere near the sun?
What is a trophic level?
A level in an energy pyramid
What would happen to a food web/chain if one organism dies?
It could crash
What is the difference between climate and weather?
Climate is the pattern of weather happening over time while weather is what is happening right here, right now.
How much energy is lost as you go up each trophic level in an energy pyramid?
10%d
Usually have organisms that are adapted to be able to survive in both salt and freshwater and is a high birthing area.
Why do not all organisms fit neatly into the consumer, producer, or decomposer category?
Because some organisms eat a variety of things which would put them in more than one category.
Why do the numbers of organisms decrease as you go up an energy pyramid?
Because the amount of energy available becomes less as you go up
What is the aphotic zone of a water ecosystem?
The area where no sun is present
What is an energy pyramid?
Shows how energy is moved through an ecosystem
What is the intertidal zone of a water ecosystem?
The beach area of a water ecosystem
What is the greenhouse effect?
When Carbon dioxide is released into the environment and gets trapped, causing the Earth to heat up
What is the photic zone of a water ecosytem?
The area where light is present
What is the open ocean part of a water ecosytem
The deepest part of the ocean, where boats travel. Has a photic and aphotic zone area
What is a primary producer - give an example?
An organism that gets its energy directly from the sun
plant
What is the coastal ocean part of a water ecosystem
The mark from tide to the edge of the continental shelf
Explain the nitrogen cycle
nitrogen in atmosphere is toxic so bacteria on legume plants take in and make it usable. Plants then take it in and an animal eats the plant. The animal then poops or dies and the nitrogen is released back into the soil.
Explain the water cycle
Water is in lakes - evaporates up to clouds - clouds cool water in a process called condensation - clouds become heavy - water comes back down in the form of precipitation
What adaptations do animals in estuaries have to have?
Need to be able to live in both salt and freshwater.
What is a decomposer? Give an example
Breaks down dead things or waste
Mushroom
What is a biome?
an area of land that has similar climate and precipitation.
What is a detritivore? Gives an example
Eats the broken down things that decomposers make
Worms
Name one human choice that can affect our life cycles (water, nitrogen, etc.)
burning, cars, pollution, etc.
