What is a pull factor for immigration?
Granted 160 acres of free land in the West as long as people lived on the land for 5 years and were able to start a farm.
What was the Homestead Act?
Organized groups that controlled political parties. Ran by bosses that bribed voters.
What is a political machine?
First immigrant group. Was disliked because they were Catholic
Who are the Irish?
Helped settle the west by allowing people to travel their faster.
What is the Transcontinental Railroad?
When politicians give government jobs to their friends after winning election.
What is the spoils system?
Regions where most immigrants came from in the 1890's
What is eastern and southern Europe?
When someone joins a culture. Native Americans were sent to schools to do this.
What is assimilation?
A term for when cities grow and can lead to problems like unsanitary conditions and overcroweded tenements (apartments)
What is urbanization?
Banned all Chinese from coming into the United States because they feared they were taking jobs from Americans.
What is the Chinese Exclusion Act?
Forced Native Americans to farm on land. Helped assimilate them.
What is the Dawes Act?
Political boss of the New York City political machine called Tammany Hall
Who is Boss Tweed?
A term for someone who supports native born Americans over immigrants.
What is a nativist?
Last major attempted by Native Americans to resist attacks on their land. Led to the deaths of women and children when U.S troops shot into the crowd.
