Abdominal cavity
The superior (upper) part of the abdominopelvic cavity. It contains the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.
Abdominal regions
A more precise method of division (than quadrants) that divides the abdomen into nine regions (Figure 7-9 in the text).
Proximal
Means the point of reference is close to the trunk of the body or close to the point of reference.
Posterior
Pertains to the back of the body (or toward the back).
Lateral
Means away from the midline
Superficial
Terms that relate to structures that are located near the body surface.
Superficial

Deep
Terms that relate to structures within the body, located away from the body surface.
Distal
Means the point of reference is far from the trunk of the body or far from the point of reference
Medial
Means toward the midline
Body cavities
Spaces within the body that contain vital organs
Inferior
Means the knee is superior to the ankle but inferior to the hip.
Cranial

Ventral cavities
The large anterior body cavities separated by the dome-shaped muscle called the diaphragm, which is important for respiration (breathing).
Ventral
Pertains to the front of the body; body parts on the front of the body are called ventral or anterior
Bilateral
Pertains to conditions or structures that affect both sides of the body.
Buccal cavity
The cavity (or mouth) for the teeth and tongue
Spinal cavity:
The part of the dorsal cavity that contains the spinal cord
Thoracic cavity
The cavity located in the chest and contains the esophagus, trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, and large blood vessels
Dorsal
Pertains to the back of the body; body parts on the back of the body are called dorsal or posterior
Anterior
Pertains to the front of the body (or toward the front).
Cranial cavity
The part of the dorsal cavity that contains the brain.
Nasal cavity
The cavity for the nose structures.
Orbital cavity
The cavity for the eyes
Pelvic cavity
The inferior (lower) part of the abdominopelvic cavity. It contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine.
