What is the autonomic nervous system?
contains the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which control involuntary body functions
What is the cerebrum?
largest and highest section of the brain
What is the midbrain?
section located below the cerebrum at the top of the brainstem; responsible for conducting impulses between brain parts and for certain eye and auditory reflexes
What is the peripheral nervous system?
consists of the nerves and is divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous system
What is the thalamus?
acts as a relay center and directs sensory impulses to the cerebrum
What is the brain?
mass of nerve tissue well protected by membranes and the cranium, or skull
What is the diencephalon?
section located between the cerebrum and midbrain; contains the thalamus and hypothalamus
What are nerves?
combination of many nerve fibers located outside the brain and spinal cord
What are pons?
section located below the midbrain and in the brainstem; responsible for conducting messages to other parts of the brain, certain reflex actions, saliva production, and for assisting with respiration
What are ventricles?
hollow spaces that connect with each opther and with the space under the arachnoid membrane
What is the central nervous system?
consists of the brain and spinal cord
What is the hypothalamus?
regulates and controls the autonomic nervous system, temperature, appetite, water balance, sleep, and blood vessel constriction and dilation
What is the nervous system?
omplex, highly organized system that coordinates all the activities of the body
What is the somatic nervous system?
carries messages between the CNS and the body
What is the cerebellum?
section below the back of the cerebrum; responsible for muscle coordination, balance, posture, and muscle tone
What is the medulla oblongata?
lowest part of the brainstem; connects with spinal cord and is responsible for regulating heartbeat, respiration, swallowing, coughing, and blood pressure
What is a neuron?
nerve cell
What is the spinal cord?
continues down from the medulla oblongata and ends at the first or second lumbar vertebrae; responsible for many reflex actions and carries sensory messages up to the brain and motor messages from the brain to the nerves that go to the muscles and glands
What is the cerebrospinal fluid?
clear, colorless fluid inside the ventricles
What are the meninges?
three membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord
Describe parasympathetic.
ounteracts the actions of the sympathetic system after emergency by slowing heart rate, decreasing respiration, lowering blood pressure, and increasing activity in the digestive tract
Describe sympathetic?
prepares the body to act in emergency by increasing heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, and by slowing activity in the digestive tract
