The delegate of Japan motions for a 20-minute unmoderated caucus, the delegate of South Africa motions for a 15-minute unmod, and the delegate of the USA motions for a 10-minute unmod. What do you do?

Only entertain 1 motion for unmods. You can “suggest, smile upon,” or work together to set committee goals!

100

What should you do if you are roaming and an FA is in the room?

Greet them if you are in an unmod! If you see an FA, introduce yourself and ask if they have any questions! Usually, the conversation starts itself.

Who should be using the computer in the DAIS? When should you use your phone in committee?

  1. Only Co-Chair should be using it. The Chair should pay total attention to the delegates.

  2. DO NOT use your phone unless it is an emergency. Slack should be open on your computer.

100

Scenario: what should you do if a delegate faints in your committee?

  1. ESCALATE to your USG

  2. You are not trained to handle medical emergencies, leave it to us!

  3. DO NOT TOUCH THE DELEGATES

200

You have 20 minutes left in committee and the Bloc NHSMUN best and Bloc NHSMUN bestest want to present DRs. What do you do?

  1. Be consistent with time when presenting draft resolutions!

  2. The amount of time given for each resolution needs to be equal or people start crying foul. You can't give one resolution 10 min and another 5.

  3. Make sure you set a timer and give everyone an equal amount of time.

Delegate of Ukraine is talking and is very hyped up about his speech. The time was 1 minute and the time is almost done and he has not stopped talking.  You already gaveled once. He is still talking. What do you do?

Always let them finish the sentence that they are on! If a delegate continues after 1 gavel bang, just bang the gavel one more time. Delegates usually will get the message and stop. If they truly do not stop, you can cut them off.

200

When can delegates use their computers?

Only during unmoderated caucuses

Scenario: you have a group of delegates that are misbehaving, throwing paper around, being loud, and ultimately being rude. What do you do?

Scenario pt 2: you have already warned them and they are acting the same way. What do you do?

  1. Don’t threaten to “punish” delegates if they are misbehaving or aren’t on task in committee. Make a general announcement. Don't yell because you will lose all your authority.

  2.  Have one dias member speak to them on the side and split them up, move them to new seats.

  3. Escalate to your USG!

300

How many motions should you take in committee?

  1. Do not take a lot of points and motions! This slows down debate and will make delegates disengaged. FAs won’t be happy if they see that more time is being taken to figure out what to talk about rather than debating the topics.

  2. 3-4 MAX is a good rule of thumb.

You have 5 WPs and you want a merge. Delegates of Bloc X say their solutions are contradictory with those of Bloc Y. You check them and see that is not the case. What should you do?

Bonus point: how many sponsors do we need for WPs and DRs?

Don’t force, but encourage merging!  Explain to delegates that a good merge is blends the ideas from both blocs. Not just copying and pasting DRs!

Bonus point: 25% of committee

Scenario: Your microphone and projector stop working. What do you do?

  1. Speak louder and continue without the projector.

  2. Message the correct thread so we can have it fixed ASAP.

300

Scenario: What do you do if a delegate says “all Catholics should be burned” and at the same time a mad FA tells you that their Hilton rooms are closed?

  1. Prioritize!!! Immediately cut off the speech and calm the committee down. Make a general announcement about committee conduct and appropriate language. Racist/ discriminatory language is not tolerated!

  2. ESCALATE!!! Slack your USGs.

  3. Regarding the FA, tell them that you will make sure that their issue gets addressed. You don't know everything and that is ok!! Escalate to your USGs as well.

400

You voted on motions incorrectly (not according to disruptance) and you have 3 FAs in the room. What do you do?

  1. If there are no points of order from a delegate, then just move on

  2. If they call you out, address your mistake and move on.

  3. To avoid: Know ROP! Ask for help if you don’t know! Slack your USG!

Logistically, how do moderated caucuses work in large committees? Medium? Small?

1. Small committees-  given from a delegate’s seat.

2. Rest of the committees- line up 2-3 delegates at a time.

One speaks while the other waits, when one finishes speaking, you call one more person to line up so there is always one person waiting. This reduces the time it takes to come up and start a speech

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Keep debate flowing. Calling on 10 delegates at a time will only give us good speeches but little to no debate.

Scenario: The Delegate of Canada is using their phone and laughing when the shy delegate of France is speaking. The delegate of France looks sad. What should you do?

  1. Announce that phones can be used only OUTSIDE committee rooms.

  2. Talk to the delegate during an unmod and motivate them to participate.

400

Scenario: An FA approaches you and is mad that you have not called on their delegate- you know you have called on them multiple times. How do you respond?

  1. Listen to the FA. Be NICE. Let them know that you have been picking on them, but will make a note to call on them more.

  2. Tell them you track who speaks, just don't show them the tracker.

  3. Call them the next round, ideally when the FA is present
