Volcanoes
Landslides & Floods
Weathering
Erosion & Deposition
100
Earth's outside layer that is made of huge slabs of rock.
What is the crust?
100
This is the area of the earth below the crust.
What is the mantle?
100
Pulling force that acts on all objects.
What is gravity?
100
Weathering is the breaking down of ________ into smaller pieces.
What are rocks?
100
Erosion is the movement of this.
What is weathered rock?
200
A sudden movement of the rocks that make up the crust.
What is an earthquake?
200
Parts of the mantle and core of the earth have a melted rock called this.
What is magma?
200
Rapid movement of rocks and soil down a hill.
What is a landslide?
200
These are some things that can break down rocks. (Give 3)
What are running water, rain, wind, and temperature changes?
200
These are 4 things that cause erosion.
What are moving water, wind, glaciers, and gravity?
300
An earthquakes vibrations travel in _________ in all directions.
What are waves?
300
Melted rock that flows onto land.
What is lava?
300
This landform is a large body of moving water.
What is a river?
300
How do wind and running water (like rivers) cause weathering?
What is they pick up small rocks which scrape against other rocks and over time wears the rock away.
300
A mass of ice that moves slowly across land.
What is a glacier?
400
This is where earthquakes begin.
What is the epicenter (or the earthquake's center)?
400
A mountain that builds up around an opening in the crust.
What is a volcano?
400
This happens when the water in a river flows over its bank.
What is a flood?
400
How does rain and temperature change cause weathering?
What is: the water gets inside cracks in rocks then when the weather freezes, it expands and widens the cracks.
400
This is the dropping off of sand and rocks into a new place.
What is deposition?
500
These are effects of an earthquake. (Must state at least 2)
What is: The ground shakes; Building and bridges collapse; highways may move or crumble, people may be injured or killed.
500
Lava that piles in layers and layers over time may form this.
What is a volcanic mountain?
500
How are landslides and floods similar? (state 2 ways)
What is: they both can cause much destruction and both can be caused by excessive rain.
500
How do living things cause weathering?
What is: Plants may grow in cracks of rocks. Their roots eventually split the rocks apart. OR when animals dig in the ground, they can uncover buried rocks when may then begin to weather.
500
How does a glacier cause weathering and deposition?
What is: As it moves slowly across the land, the glacier tears rocks out of the ground taking them with it. Then as it melts it drops them off into a new place.
