The types of energy involved in pole vaulting are gravitational and elastic potential energy. A pole vaulter has increasing gravitational potential energy as he/she reaches the top of his/her jump because this changes the pole vaulter's position relative to the Earth. Elastic potential energy comes from the compression, or bending of the pole vaulter's pole. As the pole bends, it gains more elastic potential energy.
