Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition

Importance of Models
You don't know do ya!!
100

This is the breaking down of rock/minerals over time.

What is Weathering

100

water flowing from a river into a larger body of water can throw some of its sediment into the larger body of water. Over time this can cause a build up beyond the mouth of the river that can eventually be higher that the water level. This build up of sediments would be the result of which process?

Erosion
100

This is the opposite of a lake.

What is an island

100

We said that all scientific models do a good job of accurately showing us at least some of the aspects of the actual thing. The different ways that a models do a good job of modeling are called this...

Benefits

100

This is a body of water with land all the way around it

Lake

200

This is the process by which sediment is laid down in a new place.

What is Deposition

200

Glaciers are giant sheets of ice that are moving. They are very good at eroding land. If the glacier continues to erode sediment in the same path we would end up with a depression in the land. Once deep enough we might call it this...

Valley, Fjord, Canyon

200

The coast is the area where the mainland is transitioning from land to ocean/sea. This Landform is a long and skinny deposit of sand that is just above sea level, and runs parallel to the shore. These landforms also help to reduce the effects of storms as they come ashore.

What are Barrier Islands

200

We said that all models, while helpful, are unable to accurately represent some aspects of the actual thing. The ways in which the model doesn't do a good job of showing us actual these characteristics would be called this...

Limitations

200

Barrier Islands are long narrow islands that are found just off the coast. They end up helping the main coastline in this way when a strong storm rolls through.

lessen the effects of wind and erosion

300

This is the process that is caused by weathering. This is sediment moving from one location to another

What is Erosion

300

We said that Jetties prevent sand from moving down then beach. By preventing motion of sediment what process are they interrupting?

Erosion

300

This is a fan-like landform that is built up over a long period of time at the mouth of a river. It is the result of years and years of deposits that originally came from the river itself.

What is a Delta

300

When we modeled our different landforms in the bins last week, it was said that we were not able to actually show the breaking down of sediment (weathering). However, we were able to show some of the events that might cause weathering over time. Based off of this, we said that ______________ causes weathering in real life.

Weather

300

All of the different objects we used during our erosion tray experiment were used to model this...

The purpose of modeling these things was to point out that it is these events that cause weathering.

They were modeling different forms of weather

400

These are different events that naturally happen. They can vary from climate to climate. They can be very mild or very strong. These events cause Weathering.

What are Weather Events

400

There is a type of weathering that includes reactions like hydrolysis and oxidation. This type of weathering changes the composition of substances. There is a certain landform that is formed in this way through the disintegration of Limestone rock. What type of weathering is this and what could this landform be?

Chemical Weathering

Sinkhole or Cave

400

This is a landform that consists of rock that lets water in easily. This rock can be weathered and eroded by this water (usually rainwater). So, this landform ends up being an underground network of water found in cracks/cavities in rock.

What is an Aquifer

400

Models are often scale models of the actual thing. They can often give us a much cheaper, or feasible way to study something. For instance, It wouldn't be feasible for us to go to an actual island and wait around for a few thousand years and watch the changes. What is a benefit of making a model of a cave/sinkhole?

We can't see it because they are underground.

400

Abrasion is a form of Physical weathering. It can be caused by prolonged exposure to wind or flowing water. Abrasion causes this effect over time.

What is smoothing or Rounding out

500

We know that a form of Weathering is Chemical Weathering when this happens...

What is a Chemical Reaction. The substance changes into something else as a result

500

What form of weathering are Ice and Root wedging?

Physical

500

We talked about how glaciers are giant flowing sheets of ice. These can be quite thick and very massive. As these Glaciers flow over a landmass that cause huge amounts of erosion. What other landform could the Glacier be responsible for creating? Think about cutting into the land at the same spot for a long time.

What are Valleys, Fjords.

Closest to the number gets the points!!! Between 1 and 100

Why are we told not to walk on Dunes at certain beaches?

messing with the shape of the dune or the plants that inhabit it can cause the sand making the dune to be blown elsewhere thus we lose natural habitat
