What are Biotic and Abiotic Factors? Give an example of each.
Biotic: living parts of a habitat (animals, plants, fungi)
Abiotic: non-living parts of a habitat (rocks, sunlight, water, air)

what is the difference between immigration and emigration?
immigration: joining a new population
emigration: leaving a population
100
What is an adaptation? Give an example.
a behavior or characteristic that allows an organism to survive in its environment.
ex. camouflage helps chameleons blend into their surroundings and hide from predators.
100
What is succession?
succession: a series of predictable changes that occur within a community over time
200
What is an Ecosystem?
a community of organisms living in a particular area along with all of the abiotic factors.
200
What are 2 methods of determining population size?
mark and recapture
observation
sampling

.Why does a snake having sharp fangs help it survive?
it can kill its prey more efficiently than if it had dull fangs
200
What is a pioneer species?
the first organism to populate an area
300
Order the organization within an ecosystem from smallest to largest.
Organism
Species
Population
Community
Ecosystem
300
What are 2 ways that a population can change size?
increase/decrease in birth rate
increase/decrease in death rate
300
What are the 3 types of Symbiosis? Define 2 of the 3.
Parasitism- one benefits, the other is harmed
Commensalism- one benefits, the other is neutral
Mutualism- both benefit
300
What is the difference between primary and secondary succession?
ps: there are no organisms where the change is occuring (ex. volcano forming an island)
ss: changes occur in an area where an ecosystem is already in place (paving over a wooded/grassy area.
400
How would a decrease in the population of rabbits affect the fox population?
The foxes food source would decrease, so the foxes might decrease in numbers due to starvation.
400
What is a limiting factor? Give 3 examples.
something in the environment that can cause populations to decrease
food, water, space, weather
400
What are 3 negative impacts of an overpopulation of deer in CT?
increased auto accidents
increased competition for food source
Decrease in vegetation
Increase in tick carriers
400
define competition and predation
c: the struggle between organisms to survive
p: an interaction in which one organism kills another for food.
ecosystem: a community of organisms living in a particular area with all the abiotic factors
community: all of the populations in a particular area
population: all the members of a particular species living in the same area
habitat: an environment that provides the necessary things for an organism to survive
500
What is carrying capacity and population density?
cc: how many of a species an area can support
pd: the number of individual organisms in a particular area
500
Why don't all of the organisms in the world live in exactly the same type of habitat?
Because organisms are different and have different needs. For example, some organisms have lungs to breathe air, while others have gils to breathe underwater. Some animals have thick fur or blubber and can survive in cold weather while others do not and would die. There need to be various types of habitats to meet the various needs of all the Earth's organisms.

pick an organism and explain 2 adaptations it has and how they help the organism survive.
example: Chameleon: 1) camouflage helps it blend into its surroundings to hide from predators 2) tube-like eyes help it to look in multiple directions at once, allowing it to spot prey and predators easier
