Early childhood center staff can receive punishment by law for failing to follow state licensing rules and regulations. They can be liable for failing to do these 13 things:

  • obtain a signed health form from a licensed physician for each child;
  • require all staff members and volunteers have a background check before working with children;
  • keep medications in a securely locked location;
  • provide safe indoor and outdoor equipment;
  • maintain the required adult-child ratios at all times;
  • provide proper supervision;
  • provide proper food storage;
  • maintain fence and door locks in proper condition;
  • provide staff with information about children’s special needs;
  • refrain from corporal (physical) punishment;
  • provide a safe building;
  • remove children who lack self-control and are a hazard to themselves as well as others; and
  • cover electrical outlets.
