Ecosystems
Potpourri
100
An organism that breaks down the remains of dead plants an animals.
What is a decomposer?
100
the position an organism occupies in a food chain
What is a trophic level?
100
Suppose a hive of bees eats a flower. How much of that flower's energy is passed to the bees?
10%
100
What kind of organism comes last in every food chain?
decomposer
100
What is the largest level of an energy pyramid made up of?
producers
200
An organism that makes its own food
What is a producer?
200
An animal that can't make its own food so it has to eat plants or animals for energy
What is a consumer?
200
What substance in the plants leaf enables a plant to use the sun's energy to make food?
chlorophyll
200
Put these organisms in in order to create a food chain. Start from the bottom. snake, grass, owl, locust
grass, locust, snake, owl
200
In a prairie ecosystem consisting of owls, snakes, mice, insects, and grass what would happen if the number of snakes decreased? Explain how that impacts all of the other organisms.
The number of owls would also decrease because they would have less food. The number of mice would increase because there would not be enough snakes to eat them. The number of insects would also decrease because the mice would need more food.
300
A diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem
What is a food chain?
300
A diagram that shows how much food energy is passed or lost at each level in a food chain
What is an energy pyramid?
300
What is the primary source of energy for producers?
the sun
300
What happens when you affect one organism in a food chain?
You affect all of the other organisms in the ecosystem
300
What 5 things do organisms use 90% of their energy for?
1.Growth 2. Repair cell/tissues 3. Reproduction 4. Movement 5. To make chemical products
400
An animal that eats only producers
What is an herbivore?
400
A consumer who eats only meat.
What is a carnivore?
400
What is the product or waste of photosynthesis?
oxygen
400
Why does the number of organisms decrease in each level of an energy pyramid?
Only 10% of the previous level's energy is passed on so there is a smaller amount of energy available for the higher levels. The other 90% is used at that level for living and growing.
400
What do the arrows indicate in a food chain and food web?
The direction the energy flows through the ecosystem
500
The process by which plants make food, using energy from chemicals instead of sunlight
What is chemosynthesis
500
A consumer who eats animals and plants
What is an omnivore?
500
A group of interconnected food chains
food web
500
Explain how energy flows through an ecosystem. Where does it come from, where does it go second, third, fourth and so on.
It all starts with the sun. The sun gives energy to producers, such as grass, to make their own food. Then, 1st level consumers, such as cows, eat the producers in order to get 10% of the producer's energy. Next, a 2nd level consumer, such as a wolf, eats the 1st level consumer to receive 10% of the 1st level consumer's energy.
500
If you start with 1000 units of energy in the producer level, identify how many units are available for the primary consumer, secondary consumers and tertiary consumers
1.Primary Consumers-100 Units 2.Secondary Consumers-10 Units 3.Tertiary Consumers-1 Unit of energy
