Why was Sarah G. Bagley influential in American history?

She founded the Lowell Female Labor Reform Organization, and petitioned the state legislature for a 10-hour workday in 1845. This petition was not considered by the legislature because it was primarily signed by women. Still, these early efforts to achieve equality and justice in the workplace paved the way for later movements. (directly from slides)

What are some examples of racial prejudice and discrimination against African Americans in the North?

  • New York eliminated the requirement that white men had to own property in order to vote - yet few African Americans were allowed to vote 

  • Most communities would not allow free African Americans to attend public schools and barred them from public facilities as well

  • African Americans often had to take the lowest paying jobs

What were the four barriers to factories in the South?

  1. Farming became so profitable that there was little to no focus put on new business.

  2. Wealthy southerners had their money invested into land and slaves so there was little capital to invest in business.

  3. The market for manufactured goods was smaller in the South than the North because much of the South’s population were slaves who did not have money to buy goods.

  4. Some southerners did not want industry to flourish in the South out of resentment for the North’s industry.
