Most soldiers spend three-fourths of the time in camp, not fighting. They trained 10 hours a day. A meal hardtack. Camp conditions were miserable, especially when wet weather created muddy roads and fields. There was a lack of clean drinking water. There was smallpox, typhoid fever, and other diseases. Both sides built prison camps for captured soldiers, 100 prisoners died each day to starvation or exposure.
