Wealth was measured by the amount of gold and silver a nation possessed. Purchasing goods from other nations drained a country’s supply of gold, so European nations sought to establish colonies to provide raw materials and markets for goods. Selling these goods increased the mother countries’ wealth. The mother countries would strictly regulate colonial trade by controlling with whom the colonies could trade and taxing their trade activities. (p. 35)
