What does individualism vs. collective mean?
Individualism describes characters that are concerned with their personal wants and needs. The collective is when the character is concerned with the needs and wants of the group. Actions reflect mentality.

It's all well and good to have a society where everyone is equal or at least on the same playing field (we discussed socialism and communism)...However, it's not exactly realistic. As a society, we tend to move towards class systems due to varying levels of money, intelligence, etc. There's a general need to organize people into groups.

They revealed that they had spent the last 3 months learning to read and write, using books that were once used by Mr. Jones' children.

used to indicate or hint to readers something that is to follow or appear later in a story. When done properly, it is an excellent device in terms of creating suspense and dramatic tension for readers. It can set up emotional expectations of character behaviors and/or plot outcomes.
