What are a few things we can learn from David?

  • misused his power by making Uriah’s wife Bathsheba his own wife (major sin: committing adultery)
  • tried to cover it up by ordering Uriah to the front lines of battle, where he was killed (major sin: murder)
  • he thought he could hide from God; God punished David with major consequences: the death of his baby with Bathsheba, his son from his other marriage rebelling and fighting him, not getting to be alive to see the great Temple finished and dedicated
  • David was sincerely sorry for his sins, repented, and God forgave him
  • if God could forgive David’s sins of adultery and murder, then God can forgive anything

What are a few of the epic stories from Daniel's life?

  • Nebuchadnezzar built a solid gold statue like the one from his dream. Daniel’s 3 friends refused to bow to it and were thrown in a white-hot furnace. They didn’t burn, sang and danced for God, and were seen with someone else in there with them. Nebuchadnezzar made the 3 leaders and gave honor to God.
  • King Belshazzar (Neb’s son) had a feast and a hand wrote 3 words on a wall. Only Daniel interpreted the 3 words to mean God would end Babylon’s kingdom and it would be divided. The next day Babylon was invaded by the Medes & Persians.
  • Daniel is thrown into a lion’s den by jealous assistants of a Mede/Persian king. The king (probably Cyrus) rushes to save him. Daniel was unharmed by the calm lions. Cyrus then lets Daniel & the Jews return home.

  • Daniel had a vision that God would give authority to a person “like a son of man” (Jesus = Son of Man)
  • Nebuchadnezzar had a dream about a statue made of 4 metals and clay feet; the statue was destroyed—only Daniel correctly interpreted the dream to mean God will reign over all great civilizations in history
  • Belshazzar (Neb's son) had a feast and a hand appeared and wrote 3 words on a wall. Daniel interpreted them to finally mean the Babylonian kingdom would fall. Belshazzar was killed that night, and the Medes/Persians invaded the next day
