Concept of Long-Term Memory

high-capacity storage system that contains your memories for experiences and information that you have accumulated throughout your lifetime

100

What is the definition of Encoding?

Encoding refers to how long you process information and represent it in your memory.

100

What is the definition of Explicit memory task?

When a researcher directly asks you to remember some information; you realize that your memory is being tested, and the test requires you to intentionally retrieve some information that you previously learned.

Most common is recall and recognition tasks

Mention the different subtypes of Long-Term Memory

1. Episodic Memory

2. Semantic Memory

3. Procedural Memory

200

What is the definition of Retrieval?

Retrieval refers to the ability to locate information in storage, and then access that information.

200

What is the definition of Implicit memory task?

You see the material (usually a series of words or pics); later, during the test phase, you are instructed to complete a cognitive task that doesn’t directly ask for either recall or recognition.

Assess your memory indirectly.

300

What does Episodic Memory focus on?

It focuses on your memories for events that happened to you personally; allows you to travel backward in subjective time to reminisce about earlier episodes of your life

300

Can the process of encoding and retrieval occur separately? Explain why.

These two processes can not be separated because we test how accurately someone can retrieve the information in order to examine how effectively they encoded the information.

300

What is the Repetition priming task?

Recent exposure to a word increasing the likelihood that you’ll think of this particular word when you are subsequently presented with a cue that could evoke may different words.

400

What does Semantic Memory do?

It describes your organized knowledge about the world, including your knowledge about words and other factual information

400

What is the Encoding-specificity principle?

The principle that retrieval of memory is optimal when the retrieval conditions (such as context or cues) duplicate the conditions that were present when the memory was formed.

400

When does Dissociation happen?

When a variable has large effects on Test A, but little or no effects on Test B; it also occurs when a variable has one kind of effect if measured by Test A, and the opposite effect is measured by Test B.

500

What is the Procedural Memory? Give an example.

Procedural Memory is the knowledge about how to do something.

Example: you know how to ride a bike or send an email.

500

What are the three types of encoding specificity?

The three major types of memory encoding include visual encoding, acoustic encoding, and semantic encoding
500

What are both, Explicit and Implicit Memory Task important for?

Both types are important for learning and functioning normally in your daily life.
