Explain why areas near the Equator receives warmer temperatures then near the poles.
The surface of the Earth close to the Equator is called the low latitudes. The surface of the Earth close to the poles is called the high latitudes. The low latitudes receive the most hear from the sun. This happens because the Earth is a sphere - the sun's rays hit the Earth more directly near the Equator than at the poles. At the poles, the sun's energy is spread over a larger area and so it is not as hot.
