What is the definition of profit?
It is the money left over after all the costs of running a business are paid.

It is the amount of goods or services businesses will produce at a certain price.

A Convention is a meeting that brings people together for a common purpose.
What is the definition of a compromise?
A compromise is an agreement that gives something to both sides.
One reason businesses did well during the Gold Rush is because during 1848 and 1852, more than 200,000 people came to CA, many of these people were what?
Consumers
Why could businesses in mining towns charge such high prices?
They could charge high prices because mining towns were far from other businesses that sold goods and services at lower prices (they were basically their only option)
What is so delegate?
A delegate is a representative chosen to speak or act for others.
In most of Southern California Californios were still in charge. What did most people want to end?
Most people wanted to end military government. Some wanted CA to become a state, and some were against it. Some felt like they didn’t have a choice.
What did the delegates do at the constitutional convention?
The delegates wrote a plan for state government

The gold rush brought thousands of newcomers to California during each month of 1849 which caused what to happen?
What caused California use in Los Angeles in the pueblos of northern California to be outnumbered by the newcomers (so there were more newcomers than the original people from there)

General Bennett Riley, he believed CA needed a better system of Government.

California became a state after the United States Congress agreed to the compromise of 1850.

An Entrepreneur is a person who takes a risk to start and run a business.
1. Domenico Ghirardelli- Ghirardelli business known for their chocolates
2. Levi Strauss- Levi company and known for thru popular work pants now called blue jeans
3. Eliza Steel Johnson- ran a successful clothing store in San Francisco
4. Lucy Stoddard Wakefield- pie business, baked/ sold 240 for $1 each in one week (she was able to make more money than many miners)
5. Luzena Stanley Wilson- built a hotel called El Dorado in Nevada City, and rented it to about 200 miners for $25 a week to eat/ sleep there
What happened to the workers, businesses and stores in the mining towns once there was no more gold to be found?
Workers and businesses moved on. Stores/ buildings were abandoned making it a ghost town.
What were the states called if they allowed slavery and what were they called if they did not allow slavery? In 1849 how many southern states allowed slavery, and how many northern states did not?
Slave states- they allowed slaves
Free states- did not allow slaves
15 Southern states allowed slavery and 15 northern states did not allow slavery
The general met with the delegates to decide on a plan for their state government. What was the meeting called? And what was the purpose of the meeting?
The meeting was called the constitutional convention. The purpose of the meeting was to write a constitution or a plan of government.
When the convention began where did all 48 delegates meet? How many of those delegates were born in the US and how many were Californios?
The place were the delegates met was called Colton Hall. 40 of those delegates were born in the US and 8 delegates were Californios.
Who bought all the pans he could find in San Francisco and why did he do that? How much did he buy/sell them for?

He bought them for a cheap price so that he can sell them to mining camps for more expensive. Because remember Miners needed food, if they needed food that means there was a high demand for pans for cooking. He bought them for 30 cents each and charged $15 each
What was the difference in mining for gold during the first few years of the Gold Rush Versus later on?
In the first years, miners would easily find gold in rivers and streams (on earths surface) and they were able to work alone or even in small groups. But in the later years so much gold was mined that there was really no gold left on the surface and was harder to find, so miners had to dig deeper.they used heavy equipment (hydraulic mining) to break earths surface. Some miners started companies and there would be hundreds of miners searching for gold rather than a small group/alone.
Why did people in slave states not want another free state, What would happen?
They did not want another free state, because then, if they were more free states, Congress might vote to stop slavery in the whole country.
Why did the southern states agree to accept California as a free state?
The southern states agreed to to accept California as a free state, because the northern states agreed to the Fugitive Slave Law, which required Northerners to turn in slaves, who had already escaped. This compromise was called the compromise of 1850.
