What is "GDP" stand for and what does it mean?
Gross domestic product is the total value ($) of all goods and services produced by a country in a year.
100
What is the major cause of world hunger?
There is enough food produced on the planet to feed everybody. Most hunger is caused by poverty and by food not being produced and distributed evenly around the world. Some causes of global hunger could be: war, climatic changes such as drought, poor distribution networks due to poor infrastructure, political corruption. Such situations most severely afflict poor countries.

Name at least three products that are made entirely out of fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas or that have them as an essential ingredient.
synthectic fibers (rayon, nylon, polyester); asphalt; kerosene; gasoline; propane, compressed and liquid natural gas (CNG and LNG); medicines; plastics; jet fuel; diesel fuel; fertilizers; pesticides
100

100
What is meant by the "global consumer class". Who are they?
People who make enough money to take care of their basic necessities like shelter and food with enough left over to spend on other things (consumer goods and services) are considered to be part of the "consumer class". A decade ago $7000 was said to be the dividing line between consumers and non-consumers. That number is a bit higher now.
200
What does "per capita" mean and how is "per capita GDP" calculated?
per person; divide a country's GDP by its total population
200
What is a "calorie" (nutritional meaning, not temperature meaning)? Why is calorie intake not always a reliable measure of how well a population is feeding itself?
A calorie is the measure of how much energy a food can provide to run an organism. Foods high in sugar and starch are also high in calories and are inexpensive, so poor people can afford them. However, such foods have little nutritional value compared to more balanced diets containing meats, fruits and veggies that wealthier people can afford.
200
Why do developed countries have a higher rate of oil consumption than developing countries? What % of the world population does the US have, and approximately what % of the world's oil does the US use?
Developed countries use more oil-based products to run their transportation (cars, trucks, trains, ships) and to power their industries (heat and electricity, factories). They have more money to build and support social infrastructure (roads, communication networks, schools, medical facilities, public utilities such as electricity and water, public transportation). The US has 5% of the world's population and uses 25% of the world's oil.
200
What does "technology" mean?
Technology is the development and use of tools to make work easier and more efficient.
200
What are two pressures created by a growing consumer class?
pressures on natural resources; pressure on environmental quality; feelings of resentment among those left behind who cannot consume as others do (potential political unrest)
300
What is the difference between a "developed" and a "developing" country? In which hemisphere can one find the majority of developed countries?
Developed countries are relatively wealthy (high GDP, high standard of living) while developing countries are less wealthy (lower GDP, lower standard of living). The northern hemisphere has a higher percentage of developed countries (Europe, N. America, parts of Asia) than the southern hemisphere.
300
About how many calories per day should an adult consume?
2,700
300

gasoline to run cars and trucks
300

The digital divide refers to the relatively low access to computers, communications networks and the internet in poor countries as compared to wealthier countries.

Name three ways that we might maintain a high standard of living in the US while lessening our consumption's impact on the environment.
reduce; reuse; recycle; support alternative energy sources such as solar and wind; give producers incentives to not engage in planned obsolescence; establish a culture that does not worship consumption as much as our current culture; impose stricter environmental regulations; urban planning the relies less on every family needing cars; social sharing (cars, bikes, tools, cooperatives)
400

What happens to the price of gasoline and other products made from oil if the world supply of oil increases or decreases while the demand for those products remains steady?
As supply decreases and demand stays steady, price increases. As supply increases and demand stays steady, price decreases. Supply and demand have an indirect relationship (they move in opposite directions), while price and demand have a direct relationship (they move in the same direction).
400
Why is Mr. Satchwell's cell phone a good example of "perceived obsolescence"?
Are you kidding me! His FLIP phone!? Did he steal it from the Museum of Natural History!?? Old, outdated, clunky, embarrassing... DUH!! And did you hear that RING TONE!!? It actually goes RING RING like phones in black and white movies from the 40's!!!!
400

Because a linear model requires infinite resources to continue infinitely... earth's resources are not infinite.
500
What does "consumption" mean?
Consumption is the purchase and use of goods and services.
500
Why do countries where many people go hungry export food to countries with fewer hungry people?
Farmers and other food producers can often get higher prices for their crops and food products when they sell them to wealthier countries (that also have fewer hungry people). That means that the hungry people where the food is originally produced may have less to eat.
500
What are some alternatives to fossil fuels currently used as energy sources to: 1) run cars (name one), and 2) power and heat homes (name two)?
cars: lithium batteries heat & power homes: solar, wind, geothermal
