What is Temperature?
How hot or cold something is.
What is precipitation?
Anything that falls to the earth from the sky (clouds). Snow, Sleet, Hail, Rain.
What is Climate?
What were the high and low temperatures for your class this January?
...
Permanently frozen soil found in the tundra biome climate region.
Permafrost
Describe ocean currents to me. Are they hot or cold? How do they affect temperature? Where are they located?
Ocean currents move warm and cool water all across earth's oceans. They move water from warm places to cold areas and water from cold areas to warm places.
They affect the air above the oceans and the wind blows that air over land, affecting the climate of those regions.
What does arid mean?
Dry. An area where evaporation happens more often than precipitation.
What are the two MAJOR factors that determine a region's climate?
Temperature and Precipitation
What are the 4 ways we are able to label and organize our data?
Mean, Median, Mode, Range
Sea and land breezes over a large region that change direction with the seasons.
Monsoon
How come areas nearest to the equator are typically warmer than others?
The equator is where direct sunlight hits the earth year-round. This constantly warms the earth.
What are the THREE things that most affect precipitation?
Prevailing Winds
Seasonal Winds
Landforms (Mountains)
Name the 3 major climate zones
Polar
Temperate
Tropical
How do you find the range of a set of data? What can it tell us about the climate of a region?
You find the highest number and subtract the lowest number. It tells you how wide the difference is. The larger the range, the more extreme the climate. The more narrow, the more mild.
A grassland located close to the equator that may include shrubs and small trees and receives as much as 120 centimeters of rain per year.
Savanna
What are the FOUR things that affect temperature?
Latitude
Ocean Currents
Altitude/Elevation
Distance from ocean/seas
List these areas from least to greatest in terms of precipitation amount.
Steppe • Marine West Coast • Desert • Humid Continental
Desert • Steppe • Humid Continental • Marine West Coast
What is the difference between a mild climate and an extreme climate?
Los Angeles High: 79 Low: 51
Extreme Climates have a wide range of temperatures. The highs are hot and the lows are cold.
Nashville High:89 Low: 28

What is the MODE for this set of data?
What is the MEDIAN?
What is the RANGE?
Mode: 7
Median: 6
Range: 10
A prairie or grassland found in semiarid regions. Low precipitation but not as low as a desert.
Steppe
How is the temperature different in these three climate regions?
Continental • Marine • Tropical
Continental: More extreme temps Very cold and hot
Marine: Mild Temps , just kind of hot, not really cold
Tropical: always warm year round. Considerably mild.
Explain how precipitation is affected by the windward and leeward sides of the mountain. Be specific. (EARN THAT 500 POINTS)
As warm water vapor builds, it cools down when the wind blows it towards the colder altitude of the mountain. Clouds can also get blown this way.
The clouds and vapor get blocked by the mountain. Some passes over but most falls on this WINDWARD side of the mountain.
The moisture is lost as it travels through the mountain and the leeward side ends up drier and warmer. The wind does not hit this side directly.
Break down the word Temperate Humid
Temperate means hot and cold seasons.
Temperate is between Polar and Tropical
Humid means moisture in the air. Gets rain.

What is the MEAN for this set of data?
A wet and warm climate found on the edges of the tropics.
