The demand for cash crops like sugarcane and cotton was very high, this meant that increasing the supply of these crops could be very valuable. The most cost effective way of doing this was through slavery, so its prevelance greatly increased.

The steamboat greatly increased the efficiency of trade and transportation which further increased the money to be made in cotton production.

The antebellum period was important for shaping the state’s identity as it helped to introduce the culturally French Creoles and the newer American immigrants, created many new political parties, and greatly changed the economy. This is shown on page 254 of the textbook where it states,” sugar and cotton were the two main crops that underwrote the port’s success and made so many Louisiana planters prosperous.” This shows that the economy was greatly changed and became an important aspect of the country for many years to come. This also made New Orleans an even more important port, which is still a very important part of the state today.
