How is the Water Cycle Related to Weather?
How Do Land Features Affect the Water Cycle?
How Can Weather Be Predicted?
100
The movement of water from the surface of Earth into the air and back again.
water cycle
100
Water that falls to Earth.
precipitation
100
What will happen when you heat liquid water to a high temperature?
evaporate
100
What is a breeze? Now explain what a sea breeze is.
A light wind that blows in from the sea or any other large body of water.
100
What type of air mass would bring snow? A.) cold, dry air mass B.) cold, wet air mass C.) warm, dry air mass D.) warm, wet air mass
B.) cold, wet air mass
200
The process by which a liquid changes into a gas.
evaporation
200
The process by which a gas changes into a liquid.
condensation
200
Of the following temperatures, which is the lowest at which liquid rain is likely to fall? a. -2 degrees b. 6 degrees c. 16 degrees d. 24 degrees
B. 6 degrees
200
Explain a land breeze.
A breeze moving from the land to the water.
200
What might happen when two air masses come together and form a warm front?
steady rain
300
A large tropical storm that has winds of at least 74 miles per hour.
hurricane
300
The area on the side of a mountain range that gets little or no rain or cloud cover.
rain shadow
300
Where do most storms form? a. over land b. in the "eye" c. at fronts d. over a peninsula
C. at fronts
300
Why do rain shadows occur?
When a moving body of air can't move through the mountains, the air is pushed up and then over. As the air moves up, it cools and the water vapor in the cooler air condenses and brings rain to that side of the mountain. By the time the air reaches the other side, the air is dry.
300
When does a warm air mass form a warm front?
when it moves and pushes against a cold air mass
400
A large body of air that has a similar temperature and moisture level.
air mass
400
The boundary where a cold air mass moves under a warm air mass.
cold front
400
Which of these causes flooding during a hurricane? A. clouds of a thunderstorm B. spirals of high winds C. rain and storm surges D. the "eye" of the storm
C. rain and storm surges
400
Will sea breeze storms happen more often in warm places or cool places? Explain.
In warm places; the warmer the air is, the more water evaporates into it, and the more likely it is to rain.
400
You hear on the radio that a cold front is headed toward your town. What type of weather can you expect?
rainy weather and possibly thunderstorms- temperature will drop
500
A weather instrument used to measure air pressure.
barometer
500
A weather instrument that measures wind speed.
anemometer
500
Name and explain the three things that happen when water falls on land.
1.) evaporation 2.) groundwater- Soaks into the soil and moves deeper into the ground and flows through rock underground 3.) runoff- When the ground can't hold any more water, the groundwater becomes runoff and flows into creeks and streams and eventually will flow into oceans.
500
Why do you think sea breezes form over the center of Florida?
Florida is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Sea breezes can come in from the east and from the west. When these breezes meet, the air becomes very unstable. If air masses have a lot of water vapor, a very strong sea breeze storm could form over the center of the peninsula.
500
Name three weather instruments and how what they measure.
thermometer- temperature barometer- air pressure rain gauge- rainfall anemometer- wind speed
