The Three Tiers

Any student who is having difficulty learning to read. They may be having difficulty with oral language, phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, motivation, and other factors.

What is Tier I

The act of coming into or between so as to hinder or alter an action.
What is intervention?

Intervention that is generally taught in small groups or individually either in or out of the classroom; it is designted to raise students' reading levels at a rate that is faster than would be expected and thus lead to more than adequate yearly progress.
What is Tier II

Prevents or stops failure by providing additional instructional. This approach recognizes struggling readers and acts before failure occurs.
What is a Reading Intervention Program?

Intervention designed for the struggling reader with the most severe needs. A reading specialist or some other diagnostician in the school does a thorough diagnosis and usually provides the instruciton, often on an individual basis.
