The need for new trade routes lead to the discovery of the America's by accident. Columbus wanted to get to India and thought that there was no land in between so he thought it would be a quick trip. He went to the Queen of Spain and asked for funds, she said yes as long as he claimed any land you find for Spain and preach Christianity to the people. Then he set out for his voyage when he reached what he thought was India when it was actually the America's.
