A food web is a system of many food chains where the flow of energy branches in many different directions. A food chain only goes in one direction, and shows how organisms transfer energy.
Describe what a food web is and how it differs from a food chain.

What Rachel sees helps explain the food web in the swamp and how materials cycle through the system. The algae are producers that make food from sun. The snails eat the algae, and the cranes and fish eat the snails. When these organisms die, the fungi are decomposers that absorb dead orgranisms, returning the nutrients and minerals to the ecosystem. All these organisms work together to keep cycling energy and nutrients through the swamp. Soon, the cycle begins again with new algae.
Rachel is looking at a swamp. She sees sandhill cranes swooping by, algae on a pond, small snails, fungi, and some fish. Explain how what Rachel sees helps tell the story of how the organisms she sees are connected and how thay all help the swamp ecosystem thrive.
