I stand up and look at my handiwork. The tent looks like it will fall over if anyone just glances at it funny. The tent poles lean toward each other. The ropes holding up the poles are barely tied. Two of the four stakes, one at each corner of the tent, are already loose. The door of the tent will not close, and the lone window in the tent wall has a rip in it.

“Well, it looks better than it did yesterday,” I sigh. “Maybe I can get it in better shape after some lunch.”

I turn to look at my fire. Circled by large rocks, the flames are reaching for the sky. Grabbing from a small pile of branches, I gingerly place a few branches on the fire. The flames catch hold of the new fuel and grow even higher.

“At least this came out okay,” I say.

Pulling a can of beans from my backpack, I pull open the tab and pour the beans into a dented pot. I sit the pot on a flat rock next to the fire. Bubbles soon appear in the beans. I know I do not have long to wait.

A hawk circles overhead. This distracts me for several minutes. As the hawk flies out of sight, I turn my attention back to the fire. The beans are on fire with black smoke streaming from the pot.

“Oh, no!” I yell. “That was my last can of beans! Now what am I going to do?”

“Selena, would you like to join me for lunch?” asks Marcia as she walks up to my campsite. “I’ve got a pot of stew ready to eat.”

“Uh, sure,” I answer, “as long as you have enough to spare.”

“I have plenty,” answers Marcia. “Maybe after our stew we can take a look at your tent.”

B does not think Selena should be camping alone.
