Explain HOW the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian nationalist led to all of Europe being at war.

AH sent an ultimatum of three parts. Serbia refused to comply with the third term to have AH come in and take down the black hand. So AH declared war on Serbia. Russia came to the aid of Serbia, Germany and Italy came to the aid of AH (based on alliances), and France and Britain (along with their colonies - including Canada) join in with Russia.
