MYSTERY QUESTIONS
100

What are the two basic categories of energy?

Kinetic and Potential

100
What determines a chemical's state of matter?

The motion of its atoms.

100

How many significant figures are in 1,200?

Two.

100

When going from scientific notation to standard notation, if the scientific notation has a NEGATIVE exponent will the standard notation be a decimal or whole number?

Decimal

100

How tall is Mrs. Corsello's husband?

6'7"

200

List at least 6 of the 9 major types of energy we covered. (HINT: There are 5 kinetic and 4 potential).

KINETIC: Motion, Thermal, Radiant, Sound, Electrical

POTENTIAL: Gravitational, Elastic, Nuclear, Chemical

200

Which state of matter has the fastest atomic movement?

Gas

Change 1,230,000 into Scientific Notation

1.23 x 10^6

200

Name one of Mrs. Corsello's hobbies?

[Answers vary]

You are running late for school because the bus broke down. The bus driver is trying to start the bus using jumper cables.

List two types of energy that are involved in this scenario.

Electrical, Motion (movement of the bus, moving the cables, etc.), Chemical (battery), etc.

300

You leave your iced coffee on your school desk and it begins to melt. What is happening to the ice at the atomic level?

The atoms in the ice are beginning to move faster and spread farther apart.

300

Round 0.002001 to two significant figures.

0.0020

300

Change 0.00765 into Scientific Notation

7.65 x 10^-3

300

Name one animal besides dog/hamster that Mrs. Corsello has owned.

Cats, horse, hedgehog

400

You eat a protein bar then go to the gym to work out.

List three types of energy involved in this scenario, including AT LEAST one potential and one kinetic energy.

Food: Chemical Energy

Exercise: Motion, Thermal, Sound (if you listen to music), etc.

400

You are boiling water on the stove to make pasta and your glasses begin to fog up. Name the type of state change (ex. melting, freezing, etc.) and explain what is happening to the water molecules at the atomic level.

The water is evaporating into steam. The water molecules are moving faster and faster and spreading out as the liquid turns to gas.

400

Round 0.00000004 to three significant figures.

0.00000004

Change 3.02x10^-6 into standard notation.

What is Mrs. Corsello's dog's name?

Poptart

Describe the relationship between gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy in a swinging pendulum.

GPE is built as the pendulum rises in its swing, and KE is reduced since the pendulum is slowing down to a brief stop.

KE rises as the pendulum falls and GPE is reduced as the weight gets lower.

GPE is highest when KE is 0. GPE is 0 when KE is highest.

500

You are doing an experiment with dry ice in chemistry class. The dry ice is releasing steam WITHOUT melting into water first. Name the type of state change and explain what is happening at the atomic level.

The ice is sublimating. The atoms were vibrating in place and then rapidly begin moving faster and spreading out. This happens quickly enough that the ice does not pass through the liquid stage.

500

Round 1.506 x 10^3 to two significant figures.

1.5 x 10^3

500

Change 3.4756x10^3 into standard notation THEN round to 3 significant figures.

3470

What is the mannequin's name?

Bianca
