Why does atomic size decrease from left to right across a row, if the number of electrons (and protons) are both increasing?
As the number of protons increase the positive charge inside the nucleus increases and "pulls" the electrons tighter. Since elements in the same row have the same number of electron shells, the additional electrons can not spread out into the next shell, and so are "pulled" tight toward the nucleus. Once a new row begins, however, we see the size get big again as e- spread out.
