These are the three states of matter.
What are solid, liquid, and gas?
Lemon juice is an example of this.
What is an acid?
This is a substance that can be dissolved from its solid form into a liquid.
What is a solute?
What is saturation?
A way of separating mixtures by using your hand to pick out the pieces.
What is hand picking?
Smallest particles.
What are atoms?
This substance is neutral and has a pH of 7.
What is water?
This is a substance that holds the dissolved solute.
What is a solvent?
This type of mixture looks like it is one substance.
What is a homogenous mixture?
This method is used when two substances have separated on their own. This will happen when one substance is denser than the other, causing it to fall to the bottom of the container
What is sedimentation?
This occurs when surface molecules strongly attract to each other.
What is surface tension?
An example of this would be baking soda.
What is a base?
These are usually liquid mixtures that have a solute dissolved in the solvent.
What are solutions?
An educated guess about what will happen or how the problem will be solved.
What is a hypothesis?
This method is used to separate 2 substances when 1 substance is larger than the other by using a sieve or strainer.
What is sieving?
When substances are changed but the process could be reversed.
What is a physical change?
The colour when litmus paper is placed in an acid.
What is red?
These are easily separated because they keep their physical properties.
What are mixtures?
This is the recipe of how to complete the experiment. You must list everything you do and number each step in order. If someone else reads the procedure, they should be able to redo the experiment the exact same as you so don’t leave anything out
What is procedure?
This method is used to separate 2 substances where ONE has magnetic properties.
What is Magnetism?
When a new substance is formed after two they are mixed together and the process is irreversible.
What is a chemical change?
The colour when litmus paper is placed in a base.
What is blue?
This type of mixture has parts that are visible.
What is a heterogenous mixture?
This substance is heavier than oxygen and can put out a fire.
What is carbon dioxide?
This method is used to separate mixtures where one substance does not dissolve from a liquid and is used to make sure our mixture has no solid parts.
What is filtration?
