What is the idea of family style eating?

e

• One or two children can help with setting the tables, putting out cutlery, napkins and cups.

• Food is placed on the table in serving bowls, plates and containers, with appropriately sized utensils for serving.

• Food must always be served on plates or bowls, never placed directly on to tables or high chair trays.

• There should be a quiet time before meals so that the atmosphere at the meal is friendly and relaxed.

• Children shouldn’t sit at the table until the food is placed.

• Children are encouraged to pass food around the table dishing out their own food and pouring their beverages

from small pitchers.

• All foods should be served at the same time so children can eat different foods in the order they prefer.

• Encourage children to taste all their foods, but do not force them to taste or eat specific foods. When promoting

new foods, the goal is to get the food on the taste buds 18 times! It can take many “tastes” before a child really

decides if he or she likes or dislikes a food. When children do not want to try a food, encourage them to put a

small amount on the plate to taste

• Remain calm if spills happen. Children can help wipe up the spills without a fuss.

• Conversations at the table should be relaxed, cheerful and unhurried. .

• Provide the children with opportunities to practice manners, cooperation and respect.

• If the child is not eating, encourage them to try some more but never should you force them to eat their food.

• Children and caregivers should clean up own plates/place settings
