Name 2 ways that the arrival of European American settlers affected the Ojibwe and Dakota?


European American settlers built homes and towns on land ceded by Dakota and Ojibwe. The signing of treaties in 1851, 1854, and 1855 took land from the American Indians in order to open up the area for European American settlement. By 1855, European Americans outnumbered American Indians for the first time. Sometimes the settlers violated treaty obligations by moving onto land before it was legal. Many reservations created by treaties still exist today.
