DAILY DOUBLE

what is the story behind the christmas pickle

Daily Double

1. The Civil War Soldier:

  • A German-American soldier, Private John C. Lower, was captured during the Civil War and taken to a prison camp.

  • On Christmas Eve, while starving, he begged a guard for a pickle.

  • The guard obliged, and the soldier credited the pickle with saving his life.

  • After returning home, he began the tradition of hiding a pickle ornament on his Christmas tree each year.

2. St. Nicholas and the Pickle Barrel:

  • A medieval legend tells of St. Nicholas rescuing two boys trapped in a pickle barrel by an evil innkeeper.
  • This legend is sometimes linked to the tradition of hiding a pickle ornament, as the boys were rescued and brought back to life by St. Nicholas.

3. The Woolworth's Marketing Story:

  • In the late 1880s, Woolworth stores started importing German glass ornaments, including various fruits and vegetables, to America.
  • Some believe a salesman invented the story of the Christmas pickle to boost sales of these glass ornaments, particularly the pickle-shaped ones.
  • The story of the starving Civil War soldier and the pickle barrel might have been part of this marketing effort.
