The heart works by pushing oxygenated blood through the arteries with the ventricles and the unoxygenated blood comes back through the veins from the inferior or superior vena cava which the heart sends to the left ventricle then goes through the pulmonary artery to get oxygen then comes to the pulmonary vein then the right ventricle to the aorta.
