American slave who sued his master for keeping him enslaved in a territory where slavery was banned under the Missouri Compromise. Scott lost- the court deemed the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and made slavery legal everywhere.

A law that allowed voters in Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether to allow slavery. Arguments and fights broke out in Kansas, giving it the nickname "Bleeding Kansas".

A presidential election that pitted Abraham Lincoln (Republican) against Stephen A. Douglas (Northern Democrat). The main issue of the election was the debate over the expansion of slavery. Lincoln won and then South Carolina seceded.

Admitted California as a free state and then passed the Fugitive Slave Act. Allowed for popular sovereignty in most other states added.
