Who were sharecroppers AND how did they get trapped in a cycle of debt?

freedmen and poor whites who rented land, houses, and supplies from a landowner in order to farm. They had no control over which crops they planted or how much they sold. After harvest, the landowner sold the crops, and the sharecropper received 1/2 the earnings (minus expenses). The expenses were greater than the debts, which would cause them to become trapped in a cycle of debt.
