Total war was Ulysses S. Grant's plan to lead the Union Army to victory. He ordered the generals to destroy food, equipment, and anything else that might be useful to the Confederate Army. Total war affected the civilians just as much as the soldiers.

The Union Army fought an offensive war. They wanted to gain control of the Confederate States capitol of Richmond, VA. They also wanted to cut off all supplies to the South. they set up blockades to stop all trade with England. They also gained control of the Mississippi River so the South couldn't supply themselves.

What natural resources did the southerners discover?
Southerners tapped into mineral resources of iron ore and coal. Alabama became a center of the steel industry and oil sprang up in Texas and Louisiana.

What is the Thirteenth Amendment?
Ratified while President Lincoln was in office, the Thirteenth Amendment freed all slaves and banned involuntary servitude in the United States and US Territories. President Lincoln did not live to see it passed.

What is the Missouri Compromise?
The Missouri Compromise was designed to keep the number of slave states and free states equal. Missouri was admitted as slave state and Maine was admitted as free state. An imaginary line was drawn across Missouri's southern border. States north of the line were free, states south of the line were slave. This compromise was only valid for the land acquired in the Louisiana Purchase.
