What was the raid of Harper's Ferry?
The raid of Harper's Ferry was led by John Brown, an abolitionist. In October 1859, Brown and several supporters raided this town in hopes of leading a slave revolt. The group captured prominent citizens and federal weaponry in this location. The local militia held them there until Lee captured Brown.

What is the Underground Railroad?
The Underground Railroad is a passage the slaves took to get to freedom. This was not physically a railroad underground, but a route in which people housed and protected runaway slaves from being found. The slaves would make their way from house to house and hide in attics and basements. They knew which houses to go to due to a light being left on.

The Battle of Shiloh took place in Tennessee. This was the first battle with truly large amounts of casualties due to the Confederacy catching Grant's men by surprise. The Confederacy almost defeated his army in one day. The next day, Grant took them by surprise and was able to push them back to Mississippi. The Union came out with the victory.

What was the Dred Scott case? What did the Supreme Court rule?
The Dred Scott case was a trial taken to the Supreme Court about the freedom of an African American slave. This slave believed that he belonged free because he had traveled and lived on free ground. Dred Scott believed that he should be emancipated since he spent time on free soil. The Supreme Court ruled that no blacks could be granted freedom.

The Missouri Compromise is a document that states that the United States should have an equal amount of slave and free states. With the entrance of Missouri as a slave state in the Union, this broke the balance. Due to this balance being broken, Congress granted Maine entrance as a free state.
