Describe the economy of the North during the Civil War 

The Northern economy during the American Civil War was based more on factories and industry than farming. People worked in factories making things like clothes, weapons, and tools. The North also had many railroads, which helped move soldiers and supplies quickly. Because they made so many goods, the North was able to better support its army during the war.

  • New weapons were more powerful: Guns and cannons had improved, making battles more dangerous and causing more injuries.
  • It was hard to defeat the South: The South had a lot of land, so it took a long time for the North to capture important places.
  • Both sides kept fighting: Neither side wanted to give up, so the war continued for years.
