Northern business leaders, focused on expanding their industries, and they wanted to maintain good relationships with the Southern elites. As a result, they stopped supporting Reconstruction and allowed the South to continue using unfair systems, such as sharecropping. This helped prevent Black Americans from gaining real freedom and equality in society.
