The process of learning the beliefs and behaviors of a dominant culture and assuming some of its characteristics.
What is acculturation?
An individual who believes that the existence of God cannot be proved or disproved.
What is agonistic?
A person who does not believe in any deity or God.
What is atheist?
A preference that inhibits impartial judgment.
What is bias?
The absorption of many cultures into a dominant culture, requiring newly arrived groups to alter unique beliefs and adopt the ways of the dominant group.
What is culture assimilation?
Differences based on cultural, ethnic, and racial factors.
What is culture diversity?
The values, beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behaviors, and customs
What is culture?
A classification of people based on national origin and/or culture.
What is ethnicity?
Individuals who believe that their own cultural values are better than those of others.
What is ethnocentric?
A family group that includes the nuclear family plus grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
What is an extended family?
Care that provides for the well-being of the whole person, meeting physical, social, emotional, and mental needs.
What is holistic care?
A family structure in which the mother or oldest female is the authority figure.
What is materchal?
An individual who believes in the existence of only one God.
What is a monotheist?
A family group that usually consists of one or two parents and a child or children.
What is a nuclear family?
A family structure in which the father or the oldest male is the authority figure.
What is paterchal?
Often called territorial space; describes the distance people require to feel comfortable while interacting with others.
What is personal space?
An individual who worships and believes in many gods.
What is polytheism?
A strong feeling or belief about a person or subject that is formed without reviewing facts or information; literally means "to prejudge."
What is prejudice?
A classification of people based on physical or biological characteristics such as skin color, facial features, or bone structure.
What is race?
An organized system of belief in a superhuman power or higher power.
What is religion?
The ability to recognize and appreciate the personal characteristics of others
What is sensitivity?
The beliefs individuals have about themselves, their connections with others, and their relationship with a higher power.
What is spirituality?
An assumption made that everyone in a particular group is the same, ignoring individual characteristics.
What is stereotyping?
A field of nursing or healthcare focused on comparative cultural care (caring for patients while respecting their diverse cultural values and beliefs).
