How does a Scrub Tech (OR Tech) differ from an OR RN Circulator?

Circulators are primarily responsible for preparing the OR before surgery, positioning/preparing the patient, monitoring the surgical team and patient during surgery, and documenting and maintaining patient records.

Scrubbing (OR Tech) mainly consists of instrument preparation, sterilization, passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during surgery, and post op clean up/sterilization.

Note: Most OR RNs will be Circulators, but some hospitals have their RNs also scrub.

What are the main differences between a Level I Trauma Hospital vs Level II?

Level I Trauma centers deal with a higher acuity of patients and have better capability to perform lifesaving services. Level I Trauma centers typically have technology/equipment that Level II Trauma centers don’t (such as ECMO machines). What are the main differences between an RN and an LPN (outside of education)?

  • RNs are trained to perform patient assessments, plan care, perform advanced procedures (such as ventilators), provide patient education, and can deal with a higher acuity of patients.

  • LPNs provide care under the supervision of an RN or physician.  LPNs operate on a more limited scope and typically carry out patient care under instructions given. They are not able to make independent critical decisions that RNs can make, perform advanced procedures, or work with higher acuity patients.
