What is situational irony?
A device in literature where an object represents an idea.
What is symbolism?
Conversation between characters or speakers in a literary work.
What is dialogue?
A student forgets their homework and says, "Wow, I’m so organized today!"
What is verbal irony?
the repetition of an initial consonant sound in words that are close to each other. Example: She sells sea shells but the seashore.
What is alliteration?
Giving person-like qualities to non-living things. Example: The flowers danced in the breeze.
What is personification?
The comparison of two unlike things in which no words of comparison (like or as) are used. Example: The speech gave me food for thought.
What is a metaphor?
Text that is not fictional; designed primarily to explain, argue, instruct or describe rather than entertain. For the most part, its emphasis is factual.
What is non-fiction?
A mother sees her child’s messy room and says, "Wow, this place is spotless!"
What is verbal irony?
The children stacking stones at the beginning of the short story "The Lottery" is an example of this.
What is foreshadowing?
Mentioning another famous work without explaining it to the reader. Example: "It would be like Godzilla versus King Kong."
What is allusion?
The atmosphere of a literary work with the intention of bringing about a certain emotion or feeling from the audience.
What is mood?
The position of the narrator in relation to the story, as indicated by the narrator's outlook from which the events are depicted.
What is point of view?
A chef on a cooking competition show accidentally burns the meal they are preparing.
What is situational irony?
When a story is told from within one character. It uses the words "I" and "we."
What is first person point of view?
The most exciting part of the story. The top of the plot mountain.
What is the climax?
The message that the author wants readers to understand or learn from the story.
What is theme?
A character in a play drinks a poisoned potion, but the audience knows it is deadly while the character does not.
What is dramatic irony?
Language that cannot be taken literally since it was written to create a special effect or feeling.
