Auto Mechanic:  Does this job require a college degree?

No.  Many shops have their own training programs for their staff or they send the staff to industry training.   I've learned most of what I know about working on cars on YouTube but you have to ask yourself, do you really want a guy like me working on your car?

Yoga Instructor:  Does this job require college?

No, but... Many Yoga instructors have various certifications that they spent hundreds of hours attaining.  The bigger the community, the more your reputation and certifications as a Yoga Instructor matter.

Building trades (construction, drywall, concrete masonry, etc.)  Do these jobs require college?

No, but.... If you aren't good at measuring distance, amounts, and space, forget about.  Most of these people receive on the job training.

Painter (Residential and Commercial):  Is college required?

No.  But you have to learn how to paint somewhere.  In addition to painting there are a lot of industry things that painters have to know about paint, ventilation, surface prep, how to estimate materials and time for each job, etc.  Math becomes important here.

Emergency Medical Technician:  Does this job require college?

No.  It is necessary to pass several state tests before becoming certified as an EMT.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA):  Does this job require a college degree?

No, but... You do have a pass a state certification course in order to get a CNA license. Prairie High School offers a CNA program for students that want to work in healthcare.  Kirkwood and several nursing homes also offer state required CNA courses as a way to retain staff.

Pharmacy Technician:  Does this job require a college education?

Maybe.  The two most common paths are to get an associate's degree from a community college or complete a one year certificate program.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) Technician:  Does this job require a college degree.

No, but... You must take a state certification course and pass the state test in order to become a licensed HVAC tech.  If you are not licensed, you can't legally do HVAC work in Iowa (or any other state for that matter).

Retail Sales:  Does this job require a college degree?

No.  Most companies have a training program to teach their sales associates how to conduct business.  Anyone selling insurance must take a state insurance licensing course and pass the course before they can sell insurance.

Welder:  Does this job require a college degree?

No, but... Welders usually have to pass a course for the type of welding they are hired to do.  Kirkwood offers welding classes for several types of welding.

Fork Lift Operator:  Does this job require a college degree?

No, however... Many companies want to see that the fork lift driver has a fork lift driver certification (for instance, Kirkwood offers this) or that the fork lift driver was trained by the company they are working for.

Landscaper:  Does this job requires a college degree?

No, but... the person that owns the landscaping company may have college degree in agriculture, forestry, business, or golf course design.

No, but... This field has a mix of self taught and mentored photographers as well as persons who have degrees from colleges and vocational schools in photography.

No, but most medical billers complete some sort of certification course before they are hired.  Others are trained on the job.

Mail Carrier:  Does the US Postal Service require a college degree?

No.  I'm sure that the competition for management postions makes it so that those applicants have to a college degree or a number of years of experience working in the Post Office.

Realtor:  Is college required to have this job?

No.  But.... every state in the US has a realtor preparation course and a test that the applicant must pass in order to be licensed to sell real estate in that state.  So a realtor working in California, Nevada, and Oregon has to take the state licensing exam for each of those states.

Bank Teller:  Does this job require a college degree?

No.

Barista:  Does this job require a college education?

No.  Just the skills to do the job well.  Most coffee shops offer their own training for Baristas.

Web Designer:  Does this job require a college education?

No, but... Many web designers do have college degrees or several classes in web design.

Fast Food or Convenience Store Supervisor/Manager

No, generally the people hired into these positions have experience working in other aspects of the field.  Many places have training programs for their managers.

Phlebotomist:  Does this job require a college degree?

No, most hospitals and labs do require that the staffer have a high school diploma before you begin the on the job training to draw blood samples for the lab (Phlebotomy).

Business Owner: Is college required?

Depends.  On a lot of things.  If you have enough money, I guess you can own any kind of business whether you have a college education or not.  If you are building the business then some businesses require college, others do not.

Police Officer:  Does this job require a college education?

Depends.  Most police departments are in small towns and have less than 5 police officers.  Those jobs generally don't require college.  Competition is stiffer in bigger communities so those communities may require college or prior military.  Want to work in cyber crime or forensics?  Most of the time, you are going to need a college degree.

Fire Fighter:  Does this job require a college education?

No, but.... These jobs are more competitive in big cities and resort areas so the communities often require applicants to have a college education or have served in the US armed forces.

FDA (Food and Drug Administrarion) Food Inspector:  Is college required?

Depends.  The FDA says that persons wishing to become FDA food inspectors must have a either a bachelor's degree (with at least 12 semester hours in natural sciences, math or agricultural sciences) or.... 01 year of job-related experience in the food industry.  The experience must demonstrate knowledge of sanitation practices and control measures in commercial handling and prep of food.
