Muslims were gaining strength and threatening to retake control of the holy land. England, France, Germany sent crusaders to defeat the Muslims. Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany led the crusade. The crusades of Europe were defeated. Because of the defeat Europe's economy weakened. Jerusalem was left without protection, which made it vulnerable for a Muslim attack. Right before the third crusades was launched by Europe, Saladin captured Jerusalem in 1187. King Richard led the crusades but was not able to conquer the city of Jerusalem. The Muslims defeated the Christians of Europe. They came up with a truce. Saladin said Christians could pilgrimage to Jerusalem without having to pay a tribute.
