  • Clearly say no without being hostile or apologetic.
  • Explain your reason briefly, without debating or making excuses.
  • Focus on your own decision and boundaries ("I'm not willing to risk my release.").
  • Avoid escalating the situation or encouraging illegal behavior.

Ex: "I can't do that. I'm getting close to my release, and I'm not willing to risk getting a ticket or extending my time. I hope you understand, but I need to look out for myself."

  • Clearly state your boundary

  • Stay calm instead of responding with insults or threats.
  • Clearly communicate that you are not seeking a confrontation.
  • Avoid admitting wrongdoing if you're unsure what happened, while still acknowledging the other person's emotions.
  • Create an opportunity to disengage by calmly walking away or putting space between you and the other person if it is safe to do so.

Ex: "I don't want any problems. If I bumped into you, that wasn't my intention. I'm going to keep walking and give you some space."
